Hand rolls, also called temaki sushi, are a type of sushi that is made by hand. They’re generally much simpler to make than maki rolls (the type of rolled sushi you’re probably most used to) because they don’t require any specialized tools and are pretty hard to mess up. That being said, there are still some tricks you can use to make sure your hand rolls turn out as well as possible. And we’re here to share them with you.

Use High Quality Ingredients

Sushi is a type of simple food that really highlights the quality of the ingredients, so it’s extra important to use fresh, seasonal produce and cold, fresh, sushi-grade fish.

Use Sushi Rice

While it may be true that hand rolls are easier to make than other types of sushi, that doesn’t give you an excuse to take shortcuts, especially when it comes to the rice. Hand rolls should be made with sushi rice, prepared with rice vinegar, and cooked properly.

Practice Makes Perfect

To make a hand roll, just spread a spoonful of sushi onto the side of a piece of nori, top with your fillings, and roll into a cone. It’s pretty simple, but it will also get easier each time you do it, so don’t worry if your first hand roll falls apart. Just eat it anyway and keep making more.
