It is easy to mistake almond flour for almond meal or think it is the same thing. Both are made out of ground almonds, look similar, and are used for baking goods. However, almond flour and almond meal have some important differences that you should know about. Let’s check them out.

They are Made From Different Almonds

Almond flour is made out of blanched almonds that have their skin removed. Almond meal, on the other hand, is usually made with ground almonds that still have their skin on.

They Have Different Texture and Color

Due to blanched almonds and a more pronounced grinding process, almond flour has a finer texture and lighter color. The almond meal is brownish and comes with a coarse and almost grainy texture.

They Are Used for Different Baked Goods

Due to their texture, almond flour and almond meal are used for different baked goods. Almond flour is best suited for baked goods like macaroons and cakes because it gives them a more delicate and smoother appearance. Almond meal is better suited for cookies, giving them a signature crumbly consistency.

They Result in a Different Taste 

You can use almond flour and almond meal interchangeably, but there will be a difference in taste. Due to the presence of the skin, the almond meal will add a slight bitterness to your baked goods compared to almond flour.
