Almost 9,000 People Ended up in Hospital Last Year Because of Avocado

On average, 24 people per day – or nearly 9,000 per year – end up in U.S. emergency rooms because of avocados. It’s not allergies or food poisoning; most of the time, the reason is hand injuries that happened while cutting avocados.

The victims are mostly women aged between 20 and 40. The data comes from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s national injury database and a report that made a calculation based on how many hospitals are included in the national database. According to Insider, “nearly all of those visits were due to lacerations and injuries to hands and fingers, caused while cutting avocados — although there was at least one instance of someone slipping off of a stool while picking avocados as well.”

We don’t really like this statistic and will definitely be using a spoon to pick the pit from our avocados in the future! It may be delicious and healthy, but it’s not worth the injury and an evening spent in an E.R.
