Caprese Sandwich of Your Dreams: Here’s the Recipe

There are few sandwiches that can compare with the bright and delicious Italian classic, a Caprese sandwich. For a taste of the Italian sun any time of year, here’s the perfect recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 large tomatoes, preferably ripe and juicy
  • 1 ball of fresh mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • High-quality extra virgin olive oil
  • Balsamic glaze (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Ciabatta bread 

Instructions

  1. Slice the tomatoes into rounds of about ¼ inch thickness. Sprinkle lightly with salt. Slice the fresh mozzarella cheese into rounds, aiming for a similar thickness to the tomatoes. Wash and pat dry the fresh basil leaves, keeping them whole or tearing them gently by hand for a rustic touch.
  2. Begin by placing a slice of tomato on the bread, followed by a slice of fresh mozzarella. Add a few basil leaves on top. Repeat this layering until you’ve achieved your desired thickness for the sandwich.
  3. Drizzle the layers lightly with high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Add a pinch of freshly ground black pepper for a subtle kick.
  4. For a warm twist, try a grilled version. Brush the outside of the bread with olive oil and grill it until the bread is toasted and the cheese begins to melt.
