If you’ve been drinking and eating a lot of wine and cheese during this pandemic, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. You can stop feeling guilty for acquiring this “bad habit”, since recent research has just shown that having wine and cheese in your diet is actually very good for your brain. Well, that’s something we can get on board with!

Assistant professor Auriel Willette, who worked on the study, said that the team is “pleasantly surprised” by the results. However, this doesn’t mean that you should go crazy with all the cheese and wine you want.

The Study

The study lasted for four years and involved 1,787 people aged 46 and older. After filling out the survey about their food habits and telling how often they eat certain foods like red wine, cheese, fresh fruit, coffee, oily fish, beer, and cider, the participants took a “Fluid Intelligence Test”.

The results showed that consuming red wine and cheese can help prevent cognitive decline. Cheese is the most effective food in this sense.

“I was pleasantly surprised that our results suggest that responsibly eating cheese and red wine daily are not just good for helping us cope with our current Covid-19 pandemic, but perhaps also dealing with an increasingly complex world that never seems to slow down,” assistant professor Willette said.
