Foods that Help Repel Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes use their sense of smell to find their victims, aka humans. As it becomes closer to summer, these obnoxious flying demons are coming out of the woodworks. However, there are certain foods that drive mosquitoes crazy or at least make them confused enough to stop from biting. Check out these foods and add them to your summer recipes to repel those annoying mosquitoes.

Garlic and Onions

These, along with leeks, chives, and any other foods in the same flavor profile all carry a chemical called allicin. This chemical seeps out of your pores after you consume it, which helps confuse the mosquitoes. The best way for this chemical to do its job is to be eaten raw, so make some pico de gallo or add a bit of raw garlic to a vinaigrette.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This ingredient also changes your scent to a mosquito, which is exactly what you want. Add apple cider vinegar to a cleansing drink in the morning, or use it in salad dressings or soups.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass contains the oil citronella, which is commonly found in bug repellents. Instead of buying a product with this oil, eat it! Use lemongrass in various Thai recipes or even in cocktails.
