Healthy Grilled Cheese? Yes, Please!

Grilled cheese sandwiches are one of our favorite comfort foods. For some reason, that combination of toasted bread and melty cheese just makes us feel more at home and at peace than almost anything else!

Unfortunately, grilled cheese sandwiches can be quite unhealthy if you use traditional ingredients. Why not try these healthy alternatives so that your grilled cheese doesn’t attack your waistline?

Use Olive Oil, Not Butter

Traditionally, grilled cheese sandwiches are pan-fried in butter. Why not try using heart-healthy olive oil, which is also a great frying material, instead? You’ll hardly notice any difference in flavor, but olive oil is a much healthier choice.

Try Whole Wheat Bread

Most of us probably tend to make our grilled cheese sandwiches with refined and processed white bread, but it’s totally okay to think outside the box and use whole wheat bread instead. With fewer refined carbohydrates and more natural ingredients, whole wheat is a great option.

Reduced-Fat Cheeses are Great

Have you ever tried a reduced-fat cheese before? Made with milk whose fat content has been reduced, these cheeses have a bit of a bad reputation for tasting strange, but you’ll hardly be able to tell that you’re eating one if you melt it in a warm and toasty grilled cheese.
