If you like to cook, you’re probably using lots of different dry herbs in your recipes. But there’s nothing like fresh herbs for improved flavor. The great news is that there are plenty of herbs that you can easily grow right from your home so that you always have the fresh option at hand. Here are just some of the herbs you can grow.
Basil
An absolute staple in dishes like pizzas, salads, sauces, and pesto, basil is a great starting point for your at-home herb garden. It grows best in well-drained, moist soil and is very sensitive to cold.
Cilantro
Planning on making something Mexican, Chinese, Southeast Asian, or Indian? Then cilantro is a must. Like basil, cilantro likes well-drained, moist soil, but it doesn’t respond well to the ground getting too warm.
Parsley
Delicious in a cream sauce or to balance the flavor of a stew, parsley is another obvious option for a fresh herb collection. In milder climates, it can even stay evergreen all winter long.
Tarragon
With a spicy, anise flavor, tarragon is great in any hearty dish like chicken salad, sauces, soups, and vegetables. And it’s at its very best when fresh, making it a great choice for your herb garden. Tarragon particularly likes sun and warmth.
