It’s well known that Southern food is some of the most comforting homestyle cuisines in U.S. Full of carbs and cream, Southerners know how to do food right. Whether you grew up with your Grandma cooking you Southern meals or you tasted them at a restaurant, these are the foods associated with the Deep South.

Pecan Pie

Southerners don’t wait for Thanksgiving to enjoy this sweet and nutty pie, although, it does happen to be a holiday favorite. After all, San Saba, Texas is “The Pecan Capital of The World”.

Jambalaya

Jambalaya is one of Louisiana’s favorite dishes that originates from the Cajuns from the southern parts of the country. The dish contains rice, shrimp or crab meat, smoked sausage and smoked ham, diced green peppers, garlic, celery, onions tomatoes, and spices.

Gumbo

A true taste of New Orleans, gumbo is a filling soup that’s usually prepared in large, black, iron pots. It can be based on seafood and okra with tomatoes or on turkey and chicken with ham, sausage, and poached oysters.

Fried Chicken

Probably the most popular Southern food, fried chicken is moist, tender, and coated in a golden-brown crust. It’s commonly served with Southern potato salad, buttered biscuits, or mashed potatoes.

Pulled Pork

This American barbecue technique of cooking pork meat slowly over low heat that results in tender meat than can be pulled into small pieces, uses shoulder cuts dressed with a vinegar, pepper, and tomato sauce. Pulled pork can be eaten on its own or with bread served with fries and baked beans.
