How to Choose a Thanksgiving Turkey of the Right Size

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and most people are already planning their family dinner, starting with the roasted turkey that serves as its centerpiece. Picking the right Thanksgiving turkey can be a pretty difficult task, and it all starts with determining what size it should be.

Go Small

The “go big or go home” mindset doesn’t always work when it comes to Thanksgiving turkey. It’s very common for oversized turkeys to be pumped with chemicals, while smaller ones are more likely to be naturally grown and they tend to roast quicker and more consistently.

Oven Size

Another tricky thing about big turkeys? There’s a chance you’ll struggle fitting them inside your oven in one piece. If your oven and roasting pan are not big enough for an enormous turkey, consider buying a smaller one unless you’re fine with cutting it into smaller pieces beforehand.

Big Gathering?

It can be difficult to determine how much food you need when planning a big gathering, but you can figure things out based on the number of people you’re hosting. Aim for one to two pounds of turkey per person and opt for one big or two smaller turkeys based on this number.
