Ingredients
- 1 cup split red lentils
- 3 cups water
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 green chili, finely chopped
- Cumin seeds, mustard seeds, turmeric powder, ground coriander, ground cumin, garam masala (1 teaspoon of each)
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro
- Ghee or oil for cooking
Instructions
- Cook the lentils as you usually would. While they are cooking, heat ghee or oil over medium heat in a separate pan. Add cumin and mustard seeds. Once they start to sizzle, add onions and sauté until translucent.
- Stir in garlic, ginger, and green chili. Sauté for a couple of minutes until fragrant. Add turmeric, coriander, cumin, and garam masala. Sauté for another minute.
- Add the cooked lentils along with any remaining cooking water to the tempering. Mix well and let it simmer for a few minutes to blend the flavors. Season with salt to taste.
- Finish off with freshly chopped cilantro leaves for a burst of freshness and aroma. Enjoy!
