How to Make Dhal: The Perfect Winter Comfort Food

Is there anything more satisfying than a warm, aromatic, spicy lentil dish served over rice? Dhal is a traditional Indian food known for its nourishing and comforting qualities. If you want to spice up your routine, check out this recipe. 

Ingredients

  • 1 cup split red lentils
  • 3 cups water 
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • Cumin seeds, mustard seeds, turmeric powder, ground coriander, ground cumin, garam masala (1 teaspoon of each)
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro 
  • Ghee or oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. Cook the lentils as you usually would. While they are cooking, heat ghee or oil over medium heat in a separate pan. Add cumin and mustard seeds. Once they start to sizzle, add onions and sauté until translucent.
  2. Stir in garlic, ginger, and green chili. Sauté for a couple of minutes until fragrant. Add turmeric, coriander, cumin, and garam masala. Sauté for another minute.
  3. Add the cooked lentils along with any remaining cooking water to the tempering. Mix well and let it simmer for a few minutes to blend the flavors. Season with salt to taste.
  4. Finish off with freshly chopped cilantro leaves for a burst of freshness and aroma. Enjoy!
