Caprese salad is timeless, fresh, delicious, perfect for the warm months and—best of all—pretty dang easy to make. But the recipes with the fewest ingredients can also be the trickiest ones to perfect, so here are some tips for making the best possible Caprese salad.
Choose the Right Tomatoes
While it might seem like the star of a Caprese salad is the mozzarella, the truth is that it’s really a salad meant to showcase tomatoes when they’re fresh and in season. So take your time and care choosing ripe, high-quality tomatoes. They’ll shine through if you do.
Get Great Mozzarella
Okay, so the mozzarella might not be more important than the tomatoes, but it’s still pretty dang important. So a good rule of thumb? Get the best one you can afford.
Get the Right Temperature
A golden rule is that every ingredient of your Caprese salad should be room temperature before you put it together. No exceptions. So don’t refrigerate your tomatoes and if your mozzarella comes cold, go ahead and let it sit out for a little while before you use it in your salad. That’s the most authentic, traditional way to do it.
