How to Thicken Sauces, Soups, and Gravies

Have you ever made soups, sauces, or gravies that were too thin and watery and not known how to salvage them? The good news is that you don’t have to throw out these sauces and start from scratch—they can be saved with flour or cornstratch. Here’s how to thicken sauces with these items that can be found in your pantry.

How to Thicken Sauce with Flour

When using flour to thicken your sauces, you’ll need 2 tablespoons of flour mixed with 1/4 cup cold water for each cup of medium-thick sauce. Make sure you thoroughly mix the water with the flour to prevent lumps. After stirring the water/flour combination into the sauce, cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly. Heat for one more minute so the flour is completely cooked.

How to Thicken Sauce with Cornstarch

For this method, you’ll need 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon of cold water for each cup of medium-thick pasta. Make sure you thoroughly mix the cornstarch and water before pouring it into your sauce. Then, cook and stir over medium heat until it’s thick and bubbly. Heat for two more minutes to completely cook the cornstarch.
