There is nothing like adding a fresh herb to your cocktail. Not only does it provide another layer of flavor, it adds health benefits as well as an element of freshness that will lighten up your drinks. If you are curious as to how to use herbs in cocktail mixing, here are some good tips.

Simple Syrups

Making simple syrups are a great way to infuse the flavor of herbs into your drinks. All you have to do is put equal parts water and sugar into a pot over medium heat and cook to a simmer and until the sugar has dissolved completely. Then, throw in whatever herbs you want to infuse. After just a minute or so, take the mixture off the heat and let sit anywhere from 30 minutes until 4 hours. Take out the leaves, store, and use for all sorts of drinks!

Garnish

A lot of times it’s hard to think of a good garnish for cocktails, but using fresh herbs is a great way to go! For example, you can put a sprig of rosemary into a gin and tonic, or basil into a tequila sunrise.

Muddle

To get a lot of fresh herb flavor into a cocktail, start by muddling, or crushing with a pestle to release the oils. Add that into any number of drinks for an intense herbacious flavor.
