If you’re new to cooking soft-boiled eggs, it can be a lot trickier than you may think. There are many different factors to consider, which is why you shouldn’t automatically follow any recipe you see online. Here’s how to make them, and what to watch out for.

The Boiling

The idea of boiling eggs is pretty straight-forward. You put eggs in a boiling pot of water, and wait until they grow hard. The main question is, how long should you keep them in there? Ultimately, it comes down to two main factors: the size of the egg and the temperature of the boil.

Finding the Right Balance

If the eggs you’re using are large, then you’ll need to boil them for a little bit longer than you would if they were small. If you’re boiling large eggs in a high-boiling temperature, then you can probably be safe with doing it for about 10 minutes or so. But if you’re choosing to boil it with a medium flame underneath, go for 12 minutes.

If the eggs are smaller, you can reduce the time a little bit more. Smaller eggs over a high boil can be cooked for about eight minutes to produce soft-boiled eggs. In a medium boil, 10 minutes should do the trick.
