Dishwashers are pretty amazing devices, but they’re not miracle workers. If you’re trying to ensure that your dishwasher does its job properly and lasts for years, here are some steps to take before putting dishes into your dishwasher.

Basic Cleaning

When you finish eating a meal, whether it’s on a bowl or a plate, you absolutely must get rid of all large food items and toss them into the trash. For instance, if you’re eating something like chicken, make sure to get rid of all bigger bones. This will ensure that no large pieces of food end up in the dishwasher.

A Solid Rinse

When you’re done getting rid of all the bigger pieces of food, you absolutely must give the dish a solid rinse with water. Ideally, you’ll be using hot water, but ultimately you just need to ensure that the plate is smooth and without any dips or excess gunk.

You might be thinking, what exactly is there left for the dishwasher to do? The answer is, a whole lot. The dishwasher’s job is to deep clean your dishes, but you’re basically just removing all of the “easy stuff” first to make the process more efficient.
