Spice Up Your Popcorn with This Vegan Herb & Cheese Seasoning

In a world where grocery store snack aisles are largely dominated by cookies and chips, we’re of the opinion that popcorn is underrated. With only 30 calories and 13 grams of fiber per cup, popcorn is much healthier than many other popular snacks, and its relative lack of flavor makes it a perfect blank canvas for all kinds of fun seasonings. While you can certainly stick with a sprinkle of salt, we like to get creative and make our own using simple ingredients we find around the kitchen. This vegan herb and cheese topping is one of our go-tos.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup nutritional yeast
  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley flakes
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Add all spices to a medium bowl and stir until evenly combined.
  2. Taste the mixture and adjust the seasonings to your liking. If you prefer a stronger cheesy flavor, you can add more nutritional yeast. For extra kick, add more black pepper.
  3. Pop your popcorn according to the package directions. 
  4. While the popcorn is still warm, sprinkle it with as much seasoning as you like and toss gently to coat. For a more even coating, you can also drizzle the popcorn with one tablespoon of olive oil.
  5. Store leftover seasoning in an airtight container and enjoy!
