It is often said that a clean and tidy kitchen is a sign of a good cook. Not only does it make cooking easier and your food safer, but it also transforms your ability to cook complex dishes. A clean work surface in your kitchen allows you to be in better control of your cooking—and here are five tips on how to make that happen.

Have a Place for Everything

The number one precondition to having a tidy kitchen is to ensure that every item in your kitchen has a home. If you don’t organize the kitchen, it will always become a mess and prevent you from finding what you need.

Clean Before You Start

If you start cooking a dish with dirty pans in the sink or plates on the work surface, your kitchen will very quickly descend into mayhem. Tidy your kitchen before you start cooking.

Clean as You Go

The absolutely best way to keep a tidy kitchen as you cook is to clean as you go. Each time you have finished with an item, wash it in the sink right away.

Chop Vegetables With Salt

Sprinkle salt onto the chopping board before you begin chopping vegetables. This makes them stick to the board and stops them from flying all over the floor.

Keep a Blackboard

If you keep a board on the wall to record the timings as you cook, you can use any spare time to clean up as you go.

If you’re just starting out in the kitchen, cooking can often be a baffling experience. There are so many different things to think about that it can certainly get overwhelming. Fortunately, you can start learning quickly and easily with a few simple steps. Here are five basic tips to help you on your culinary adventure.

Leave Steak to Rest

This is a simple trick that will vastly improve your steak-cooking abilities. Once you have finished cooking a steak, always leave it to rest for a few minutes before cutting into it. This helps the steak retain its juices and keeps it infused with flavor.

Add Salt to Pasta Water

As the water begins to boil, add a pinch of salt to it (about 1/4 teaspoon). This gives the pasta some extra taste and makes it more professional.

Don’t Overcrowd the Pan

An overcrowded pan means that your food won’t cook properly. Always make sure that there’s enough space to move everything around comfortably.

Cut the Core of a Pepper Out First

Cut into a bell pepper from the top and pull its core out, which will help you easily get out all of the seeds with minimum fuss.

Chop Herbs with Salt

Chopping herbs can be difficult since they have an annoying habit of flying all over the place. You can fix this by laying some salt on the chopping board, which keeps the herbs stuck to the board for your convenience.

If you want to become a cooking pro, it’s a good idea to start thinking about which types of bread complement which flavors. The best cooks know when to use certain bread and which foods are optimal to serve them with. If you want to be like the masters, here are some simple pointers to help you get started.

Wholemeal Bread

Wholemeal bread is baked with nuts, seeds, and various grains. It has an earthy flavor that goes particularly well with soups and fresh salads. However, it’s not so great with meats and cheeses.

French Stick

The baguette, otherwise known as French stick, is a long white bread that is perfect for cheese dishes and fresh sandwiches. Its crunchy exterior and soft inside make it the perfect choice to eat fresh with a selection of cheeses, tomatoes, grapes, hams, or olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip.

Tiger Bread

This is a white bread that is oven-fired so that the top is hard, crunchy, and striped like a tiger. It’s usually baked with oil to give it this effect, which makes it perfectly suited to oven bakes like grilled cheese or toast.

Brioche Buns

This has a sweet taste, is extremely versatile, and can be used both in deserts and in meat dishes. It’s particularly suited for burger buns.

Have you ever looked at a grapefruit, thought it looked pretty good, but decided not to buy it because you weren’t sure how to enjoy this citrus fruit? If so, fear not! Here is your comprehensive guide to how to enjoy a grapefruit with four easy steps.

Step One: Slice in Half

The first thing you’ll want to do is use a large sharp knife to cut the grapefruit in half. Slice it down the middle at its most center and fattest point, and this will leave you with two sections.

Step Two: Sprinkle with Sugar

Next, take some sugar from your pantry and sprinkle it on top of the flesh of the grapefruit in both sections. Don’t overdo it, but adding just a little bit of sweetness makes this bitter and tangy fruit a lot more enjoyable.

Step Three: Use a Serrated Spoon

Here’s the most important key to eating a grapefruit: use a serrated spoon! This special type of spoon will allow you to dig out the grapefruit pieces from the membrane that separates the flesh with little effort.

Step Four: Enjoy the Juice

After you’ve used your serrated spoon to eat the grapefruit’s flesh, you’ll notice that there’s a ton of juice left over. Grab a small glass and squeeze out all of that delicious grapefruit juice! You’ll get a couple of ounces of juice that you can enjoy right away, putting the perfect end on your grapefruit experience.

Baked potatoes may seem plain and simple on the surface, but for that reason they’re complementary to so many other foods. By scooping out most of a potato’s innards, it leaves one with ample opportunities to create a truly delectable dish.

Indeed, filling out potatoes with various foods is becoming one of the most booming trends in the food scene—so if you’re interesting in joining the party, here are some of the best potato filling ideas around!

Tuna and Sweetcorn

Mix a can of tuna and olive oil with mayonnaise. Boil or fry sweetcorn and mix it into the tuna, before serving on a steaming baked potato with crispy skin. The flavors of the tuna and sweetcorn complement each other beautifully, and contrast lovingly with the fluffy potato. This meal is also packed full of essential minerals, vitamins and omega-3.

Chilli Con Carne

Put a potato in the oven and cook up a powerful chilli con carne. When they’re both done, fill your potato with the chilli and sprinkle on cheddar cheese and coriander. Serve with a dollop of unsweetened yogurt.

Creamy Mushroom

Fry up some mushrooms with onions, lots of garlic, chives, and cream cheese. When the sauce is thick but still liquidy, pour it onto your opened baked potato. The creamy sauce seeps into the fluffy potato and tastes delicious with the crunchy skin.

Omelettes are one of our favorite breakfast staples—and one of its benefits is that there are many different ways to make it. Indeed, this delicious egg creation can be made with any sort of ingredients you like, including veggies, meat, and cheese.

Making an omelette isn’t rocket science, but there are a few things you should do in order to ensure that it turns out tasty. Here are three tricks that will help you make the perfect one.

Use a Small Pan

One of the most overlooked parts of omelette-making is the sort of pan that you use to do so. Instead of using a big one like you might for scrambled eggs, use a small pan that will help you shape the omelette and create a thicker egg layer.

Add Whole Milk

Before putting the beaten eggs into the pan, add a tablespoon or so of whole milk to the mixture. Why? This will help your eggs get fluffy and delicious as the proteins and fats in milk add a different dimension of texture.

Room Temperature Eggs

It’s way too easy to overcook eggs when making omelettes, which can cause it to set in place and the shape of your omelette to be compromised. Make sure your eggs are room temperature before cooking them in order to avoid this.

When you’re a beginner at cooking, everything seems difficult and complicated. But as you gain experience, you quickly learn that there are many different ways to achieve success in the kitchen with very little effort. Here are our favorite cooking tips everyone should know.

Cracking Eggs

Instead of trying to do it as they do in movies, on the edge of the bowl, crack your eggs on a flat surface. That way you won’t get shell parts in your food.

Cooking Oil

Not all oils react equally to high temperatures. For example, you shouldn’t use olive oil for cooking at all as it has a low smoking temperature, and this is when oils in general lose a lot of their nutrients and it can sometimes become potentially harmful. Sunflower oil, however, has a high smoking point, which is why its perfect for frying and sautéing.

Ready to Go

Before you start making a meal, make sure you read the recipe carefully and prepare all the ingredients you’ll need. You’ll be much less likely to ruin your food that way. You can even go about it the French way and make sure that all your ingredients are measured and prepped and all tools and equipment set out before you start cooking.

Too Much Salt?

If you notice your meal is too salty, throw in a peeled potato while it’s still cooking. It will absorb the excess salt and voila you have a perfectly salted dish!

Brewing hot tea might seem like a simple proposition. You take a bit of tea, either in a bag or loose-leaf, introduce it into hot water, wait for a few minutes, and voila, you have a cup of tea.

What if e told you, however, that the process is a little bit more complicated and involved if you want to make a good cup of tea?

Here are some tips that will help you brew a cup of tea that the Queen of England herself would approve of.

Know Your Water Temperatures

Different teas require different water temperatures if you want a well-balanced, and most importantly, unburned product. Black teas should be brewed just under the boiling point, while green and white teas should be brewed between 150 and 175 degrees Fahrenheit. This is key for brewing good tea.

Brew Time is Important

You should really be careful not to steep your tea for too short or too long of a time as well. Instead of just leaving your tea bag in the water until you remember to take it out, use about 4 to 5 minutes for black tea and 3 to 4 minutes for white and green teas for optimal, non-bitter results.

Master the Tea to Water Ratio

If you are using a typical tea bag, it’s important to use around 8 ounces of water if you want your mug of tea to turn out tasty. Using loose leaf tea? Well, you’ll want to use about one teaspoon per eight ounces.

Cooking pasta noodles is a tough job. While it might seem as simple as putting uncooked noodles into boiling water, waiting a few minutes, and then taking them out and draining them, the truth is that the process is a little more complicated than that.

Here are some tips that will help you to make perfect pasta noodles.

Use Salt in the Water

The most important tip for making pasta correctly is to add a tablespoon or two of salt to the water that you boil! This helps to add flavor to the pasta and to raise the water’s boiling point, meaning that the pasta will cook faster and more evenly.

Be Careful Not to Overheat the Water

It’s important to not cook your pasta noodles in water that is violently boiling. This will result in mushy, ugly noodles that no one will enjoy eating. Instead, try to keep a gentle, rolling boil going for the best results.

Keep a Close Eye on the Noodles

Another key to making sure that you don’t serve undercooked or overcooked noodles is to keep a watchful eye on them. Instead of just waiting a set number of minutes and then taking them out of the water, stay next to the pot and try noodles frequently to ensure that they are cooked properly.
