Everybody has been talking about Reddit user u/iamktfs “Nana’s Devil’s Food Cake” recipe and for good reason. It’s classic, simple, and has just enough of a twist to be interesting, and it seems like everybody who has tried it has given it glowing reviews.

The recipe is reported to be at least 80 years old and has some fairly simple ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup cooled coffee
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Not convinced yet? Just listen to these glowing reviews. The Kitchn‘s Grace Eklus said she “honestly can’t find a single flaw in it.” BuzzFeed’s Hannah Loewentheil called it “perfect.” Today‘s Terri Peters said she’ll “be using this recipe as [her] go-to chocolate cake recipe from here on out.”

So it seems like the evidence is overwhelming: this recipe is well worth trying. If you’re worried about the coffee, don’t be. It deepens the flavor of the cake and enhances the taste of the chocolate, but doesn’t leave any notable coffee flavor.
