Making microwave popcorn is easy, but sometimes you simply crave a big bowl of cinema-style popcorn made on the stovetop, and making those can be a struggle. Most of us do something wrong when making stovetop popcorn and end up with disappointing results, so here’s the best method for making them that will work every single time.

Use a Big Pot

It’s important to use a big pot so the popcorn have plenty of room to pop. Forget about shallow pans and just get the biggest dish you have. The kind is not very important, but if you have the one with a thicker bottom, use it.

Plenty of Oil

Before you even turn on the stove, add enough oil to cover the bottom of the pot. Add the kernels immediately, and don’t wait for the oil to heat. Put the lid on, turn on the stove and just let them get warm in the oil. This will provide an impeccable taste and you won’t have to add any fats later.

Let Them Be

It’s unnecessary to shake the pot a lot. Once your kernels start to pop, just let them be. They will easily fill up half of your pot and that’s when you can shake a bit, just to make sure there are no kernels at the top with your popped popcorn. Since they have plenty of oil, nothing will stick to the bottom, but listen to the progress and remove the pot from the stove as soon as you stop hearing the popping.
