Mashed potatoes may seem like one of the easiest things to cook, but making mistakes with this dish is more common than you think—and here are a few that you should avoid at all costs.

Wrong Type

The type of potatoes you choose can make or break your mashed potatoes. To achieve the irresistible fluffy texture that mashed potatoes are known for, always go for starchy types of potatoes.

Keeping It Cool

If your mashed potato recipe calls for the use of butter, cream, or milk, don’t add them to the mix right after you took them out of the fridge. You’ll have trouble mixing them if they’re too cold, so make sure to take them out a little bit earlier so they have time to warm up.

Skipping Salt

You can always add salt to your potatoes later, but it’s still a good idea to salt them beforehand since they absorb the water that they’re being cooked in and they won’t taste bland this way.

Boiling Hot Water

If you’re one of those people who tend to add potatoes to the pot when water is already boiling, it’s time to stop. Cooking potatoes in hot water won’t do them any favors, because their insides could end up undercooked.
