Whilst cooking fresh is best, some days it’s just not possible. For those last-minute lunches and lazy dinners, these are the three tinned items to always have in. Whether you combine some of them together to create a simple meal, or just opt for one of them on toast, at least you know you’ll never go hungry!

Tomatoes

Tinned tomatoes are the basis for multiple sauces, are delicious fried with garlic and olive oil and served on toast, and can be stirred straight through pasta with a bit of cheese for a super simple meal. Healthy, full of flavor, and seriously cheap, you can’t go wrong with tinned tomatoes.

Beans Or Chickpeas

Butter beans and chickpeas bulk out curries, soups and sauces, can be whizzed up into a hummus to serve with dips, or can form the base of a simple salad. This is one tinned item where it can be worth paying that bit more, and if you want to go super fancy then jarred beans and chickpeas are always pleasingly salty and super soft.

Tinned Fish

Tuna, sardines, mackerel and anchovies can all be used to impart plenty of flavor to pasta sauces or stews, they go beautifully on toast or paired with other carbs, and they deliver a healthy dose of protein and healthy fats. As with the beans, it can be worth paying a bit extra for higher quality fish, as this will reflect in the taste and texture.

Tinned foods can be a lifesaver when you have neither time nor energy to cook, so make sure your cupboard’s are always stocked with these essentials.
