Mexican food is an absolutely delicious cuisine and one that most people fall in love with at first bite. But if you weren’t raised cooking it, you may not know some of the tricks that it takes to make Mexican food authentic and tasty. So we’ll do our best to give them to you here.

Use Lots of Cilantro and Lime Juice

Fresh cilantro and lime juice are both flavors that are key to Mexican dishes and not necessarily that common in other cuisines. So if you’re not already in the habit of keeping fresh cilantro and limes around the house, this may be a good time to start! You can use them both liberally as garnishes.

Learn to Use Chiles

Cooking with chiles can be a bit intimidating for those who haven’t done it before, but it’s a must to master for Mexican food. With a little practice and some kitchen safety, you’ll learn that these spicy guys aren’t so scary after all—and the results are worth it.

Don’t Be Scared of Unusual Meat

Mexican recipes offer plenty of opportunities to use some less common and more affordable cuts of meat like butts, shoulders, and shanks. If you cook them right, they’ll be tender and flavorful, and your wallet will thank you as well.
