Making pies is a very daunting task for many. Although there are only a few ingredients that go into a pie crust, there is so much room for error. The key to an incredible, flakey, and delicious pie crust is to control the temperature of the ingredients: for pies, the colder the better. That along with other tips will lead you to the best pie of your life!

Butter

The butter for your pie crust should be ice cold. The reason why is because when the cold butter hits the hot oven it will create the layers in the dough that make it so flakey. There needs to be a huge contrast in the temperatures for that to be achieved, so don’t forget to put your cubed butter in the freezer for some time before you begin.

Method

Making the dough by hand is the best way to go because you can feel when the dough is right, but make sure that when you rub the butter into the flour you do it with your fingers, not your palms. This is because your palms are hotter and will make the butter become warmer.

Chilling

You must chill your dough before you roll it so that the butter gets back to a cold temperature.
