Most people know what apple butter is, but many do not know apple butter’s cousin, pear butter! This is a jam-like spread that has lots of warm spices and big bold pear flavor. With pears being everywhere this fall, make something special and give this pear butter a try.
Instructions
- Start with 4 pounds of pears, cut the pears into quarters and core them.
- Put the pears in a pot and cover them slightly with water just so they don’t burn or stick to the pot.
- Cook the pears until they are very soft, about 30 minutes.
- Run them through a food mill or a fine mesh sieve just to get the soft pulp.
- Put the pears back into the pot with 2 cups of sugar, 2 teaspoons of orange zest, 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves, as well as 1/4 cup of orange juice, preferably freshly squeezed.
- Cook until the mixture has thickened up, about an hour. Make sure to be stirring constantly so the sugar doesn’t burn.
- Once it’s cooked, cool it and put it into jars. Regular clean jars will keep the butter fresh for about 2-3 weeks in the fridge, sterilized canning jars will keep for several months.
