Hanukkah is just a week away and there are so many great traditional recipies that have been passed down to us. If you’re looking to mix things up a bit, but still enjoy the classics, there are ways to give traditional Hanukkah foods a modern twist. Here are five ways to update Hanukkah foods.
Mix Up Latkes
Latkes, potato pancakes, are a traditional Hanukkah food, and while they’re usually savory, you can make them sweeter by adding root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, and beets. In regards to topping your latkes, in addition to sour cream and applesauce, you can use smoked salmon and goat cheese or garlicky aioli.
Switch Up Sufganiyot
Sufganiyot, donuts, are a classic Hanukkah food, but if you don’t like them—which, we can’t imagine why—you can make bread pudding with fruit compote.
Modify Kugel
To make this dish which usually has gluten, dairy, eggs, and sugar, gluten-free and dairy-free, you can use gluten-free pasta and cashew cream.
Make Gelt Cookies
Gelt, chocolate coins, can be used for a dessert by pressing them into sugar cookies and rolling them in colored sugar. It’s a take on the thumbprint cookie, which everyone loves.
