You’re Step-By-Step Guide to Making Mulled Wine

Now that we’re fully in the midst of fall, we can finally enjoy delicious seasonal beverages. It’s time to sip on pumpkin spice lattes, apple cider, hot cocoa, and mulled wine. Mulled wine has been a staple at holiday markets across Europe for centuries and a favorite across many cultures. It’s super easy to make and here’s how you can make it at home.

Step 1: The Wine

Choose a wine that light, bright, and fruity like Pinot noir, Gamay, and pinotage.

Step 2: The Spices

Baking spices like nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and allspice are commonly used in this drink. Don’t forget to add sweetener like honey or sugar and a few slices of citrus like oranges. For every bottle of wine, start with a 1/4 cup of sweeter, 1 whole peeled orange, and 2 to 4 tablespoons of spices. You can even find pre-mixed spices in tea sachets.

Step 3: Heat

Pour the wine into a stockpot or Dutch oven and add your flavorings and sweetener, and bring it to a gentle simmer. Stir slowly to allow the sugar or honey to dissolve without burning and the spices to become fragrant. When the spices are aromatic and the sugar’s dissolved, about 10 minutes, turn off the heat. Pour the mulled wine into a mug and enjoy!
