The world is full of unique cuisines that are beloved to their country of origin. These cultural delicacies might sound a bit strange, but they are worth trying if you get the chance. So which ones stand out above the rest? Here’s what we recommend.

Haggis – Scotland

Haggis is a unique dish that hails from Scotland. It’s a savory dish made from sheep parts, mainly the liver, heart, and lungs. These meats are stewed together with onion, oatmeal, spices, and a bit of stock. Then, the mixture is cooked inside the sheep’s stomach. It’s considered to be quite tasty when served fresh.

Crispy Tarantulas – Cambodia

In certain parts of the world, insects and spiders are considered to be a great source of protein. The developing nation of Cambodia has a lot of street food that involves different bugs. Crispy tarantulas are a particular favorite and are considered to be somewhat of a delicacy there.

Airag – Mongolia

Mongolia is famous for its rolling steppes and horses. Naturally, one of their food staples is a fermented horse milk called airag. Airag is actually an alcoholic beverage, as the fermented milk turns effervescent and sour like beer. Traditionally, it’s served in a bowl.

While spring is almost here, most of us are still curling up at home with a hot cup of tea, and some delicious brunch food. Standard brunch items like pancakes, scrambled eggs, and eggs benedict are delicious but it’s time to add something new: chicken and waffles.

Chicken and waffles are considered both a brunch food and a comfort food. The waffles drenched in butter and syrup are delicious, and when they are combined with crispy fried chicken they essentially melt in your mouth. If that’s not reason enough to make these, then here’s one more—they’re easy to make!

How To Make Them

To make chicken and waffles you will need to mix up some waffle batter and cook them in a waffle iron. If you want to make this process quicker, you can purchase pre-made waffles that just need to be toasted. Choose Belgian style waffles, as those make the best base for your fried chicken.

Fried chicken is also pretty simple to make, you just need to batter the chicken and stick it in a deep fryer. If you want to avoid using the deep fryer, you can purchase fried chicken. However, we do suggest making at least one of the components for waffles and chicken at home.

Le Creuset is one of the most exclusive French cookware brands in the world. It’s recognizable for its enameled Dutch ovens, which come in fun colors like red, blue, yellow, and green. However, not everyone can afford to shell out $400 for one of these. That’s okay though, because some great dupes or less expensive versions have hit the market in recent years.

Cuisinart – $66

Popular cookware and kitchen appliance manufacturer Cuisinart has created their own cast iron-enameled Dutch oven. It’s significantly cheaper and manages to keep your meal cooking at a static temperature. Without buying one of these, it’s hard to know if it will last for as long as the Le Creuset version—but it’s still a good option.

Milo – $120

Milo is an American brand that began developing Dutch ovens in 2017. Since then, it has risen in popularity, and its product does look remarkably like the Le Creuset version. It retains heat quite well, and it comes with a lifetime warranty as well. Sounds pretty good for a product that’s a quarter of the price!

Lodge – $115

Last on our list of alternatives is the Lodge Dutch oven. It comes in a classic red, but the knob does have the brand name emblazoned on it. According to some kitchen tests, it does not retain heat as well, but it does cook your meal the way a Dutch oven should.

Shortbread is a traditional biscuit that originated in Scotland. It’s very simple to make, and all you need is butter, sugar, and flour. However, some bakers like to change-up their shortbread routine and add a few extra ingredients to make it their own. Here are a few add-ons that will make your shortbread even more delicious.

Lavender

Lavender is a plant known for its soothing smell, but it can also be used in shortbread to create a more savory biscuit. Some people think it makes biscuits taste a bit soapy, but others think that it adds a Mediterranean flair.

Chocolate

Almost everything tastes better with chocolate. Traditional shortbread cookies can be dipped in melted chocolate and then rolled in sprinkles. Not only does this add that delicious cocoa flavor, but it also makes the cookies fit to be served at a party.

Fruit and Nuts

If you want to maintain the delicate flavor of shortbread without any ingredients that will drastically change the taste, then add some dried fruit and nuts. The addition of fruit and nuts will change the texture of the cookie but still leave it with that shortbread taste.

Most cooks don’t think about the healing properties of the herbs and plants they grow in their gardens. Rather, they focus on what will taste good and the nutritional benefits. However, many delicious herbs also have a plethora of healing properties that many people don’t know about.

Cilantro

This is the herb that everyone either loves or hates. To some people, it’s like eating soap, and to others it adds a fine dash of flavor, especially in Mexican food. A lot of research has been done around why people love or hate it, and along the way it was discovered that cilantro actually aids in digestion. There’s also an association between cilantro and the removal of heavy metals.

Peppermint

Peppermint is commonly used in a tea form, as it is known to have a soothing effect, especially for digestion. However, it can be turned into a topical cream and rubbed on sore joints and muscles as well, providing a natural cooling sensation.

Thyme

Another common herb with great healing properties is thyme. Thyme is most effective when turned into an oil. It works as a natural antibacterial and antiseptic, which is good for small wounds when there are no store-bought alternatives around.

A well-prepared steak has to be one of the most delicious entrees on the planet. But even great meals can be made greater with the right wine to go with it.

When it comes to steak, it is well known that red wine goes best with it. However, there are many different types of red wine. Does the meal call for a shiraz or a pinot noir? Here are the wines you should be pairing with your various steaks.

Cabernets

A cabernet is the kind of wine that everyone likes. They have a very high acidity, which means they are able to complement fatty foods, like steak. The high acidity makes steak taste even tangier than it is, and it’s a good wine for those that have yet to become connoisseurs. Try one from Chile or France to start with.

Shiraz

Some cuts of steak are meatier than others, such as the ribeye. Steaks that have a lot of fat on them call for a heavy wine. The shiraz tends to have a rich flavor, which is influenced by the climate that it’s grown in. Grapes grown in Australia will be fruitier than grapes grown in France, which tend to be peppery.

Try Things Out

Ultimately, everyone is different, and these rules don’t always work for everyone. The best way to find the perfect red for you is to try a few different ones with your favorite steak and see which one complements your palate the best.

Vegan cuisine has quickly taken off, and for those looking to plan a trip based around the vegan food scene, then these are the must-visit cities. You will have plenty of restaurants to choose from, and even a vegan mall in one of them!

Portland, Oregon

Portland, one of the main cities in the Pacific Northwest, is known for its laid back style, plethora of microbreweries, and now its vegan food scene. While you can try one of the many vegan restaurants in the city, you may just want to check out the vegan mall instead.

Vegan Mall Portland is a strip mall that is full of vegan-centered shops. There is a vegan grocery store, clothing store, bakeshop, and even a vegan tattoo parlor.

Tel Aviv, Israel

A trip to Israel is not complete without trying one of the 40+ fully vegan restaurants in the city. With so many to choose from it can be hard to know where to start. No trip is complete without a meal at Zakaim, Anastasia, or Meshek Barzilay. Each restaurant features meals with Middle Eastern-inspired flavors like za’atar and sumac.

Ubud, Indonesia

Ubud has been a favorite of yogis and backpackers for decades. This small tourist town is on the Indonesian island of Bali and features a plethora of vegan-friendly restaurants. You can sit down to a smoothie bowl or a delicious buddha bowl made with fresh ingredients grown nearby. You should also grab a bite at The Seeds of Life!

There is nothing better to cook with than fresh herbs. Any good cook knows that you need fresh basil for pasta sauce, or fresh mint for a delicious mojito. Grocery stores sell fresh herbs, but why go to the store when you can simply grow them at home with a hydroponic garden?

Hydroponic Gardens

Over the last five years, hydroponic gardens have risen in popularity. Basically, a hydroponic garden is a method of growing crops or in this case, herbs without soil. Instead of using soil to plant seeds, you use a specially regulated water-based system. The water is filled with all the nutrients plants need to grow and thrive. There are also special lamps built into the system that give plants the “sunshine” they need to thrive.

Herbs To Consider

If this is your first time using hydroponics, then there are some basic herbs you should consider growing on your countertop. Basil, thyme, mint, rosemary, and sage are all herbs that are commonly used in recipes. You can try growing a batch of one or grow a few different herbs at the same time. This will give you a chance to get to know your hydroponic system, and start growing herbs efficiently.
