Plantain chips are a delicious and crunchy snack and a fun alternative to potato chips. If you find yourself craving this tropical treat, you’ll be pleased to know that making plantain chips at home is not only possible but also surprisingly simple. Here’s how.

You’ll Need

  • Green plantains
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt or other seasonings (garlic powder, paprika, chili powder, etc.)
  • A frying pan or deep fryer
  • Paper towels (for draining excess oil)

Instructions

  1. Gently peel away the skin of the plantain, which can be tougher to remove than banana peels. Use a sharp knife to cut the plantains into thin, even slices. The thinner the slices, the crispier your chips will be.
  2. Pour enough oil into your frying pan or deep fryer to cover the plantain slices. Heat the oil to around 350°F.
  3. Add the plantain slices to the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them until they turn golden brown and crispy (2-3 minutes).
  4. Use a slotted spoon to remove the chips from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain the excess oil. While they’re still hot, sprinkle them with salt or your choice of seasonings.
  5. Once cooled, your homemade plantain chips are ready to be enjoyed!
