Don’t you hate it when you are out of ideas for appetizers when you’re hosting a party? Sure, pigs in blankets are always an easy way out, but you and your guests are probably craving something more exciting at this point. This is where funeral sandwiches come in.

Despite their unusual name, funeral sandwiches are easy to make and incredibly delicious, especially if you use the recipe by cookbook author MacKenzie Smith. Her take on this Southern classic will see the guests clean the plate before you even realize that you didn’t manage to grab a single one. But this is always a great excuse to make them just for yourself, right?

How to Make Funeral Sandwiches

In order to make Smith’s version of funeral sandwiches, you’ll need a Hawaiian roll, Swiss cheese, ham, butter, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.

Smith begins by making a special sauce. Melt one stick of salty butter before adding two tablespoons of brown sugar, two tablespoons of Dijon mustard, and three tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce. Whisk until all the ingredients combine.

Next, pour three to four tablespoons of the sauce into a greased baking dish. Slice a pack of Hawaiian rolls in half lengthwise and place the bottom part into the baking dish. Top generously with thinly sliced ham and Swiss cheese.

Place the upper part of the Hawaiian rolls on top and drizzle the remainder of the sauce on it. Pop in a preheated oven at 350F and bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

Instructions:

  1. Begin by caramelizing the onions. Slice the onions thinly. In a large skillet, heat the butter and oil over low heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt to help draw out the moisture. Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for 30-45 minutes. 
  2. In the meantime, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise in a mixing bowl. Blend until smooth and creamy. Season the dip with salt and pepper. 
  3. Once the onions have caramelized, let them cool slightly, then finely chop them. Fold the caramelized onions into the cream mixture. Add the chopped chives.
  4. Cover the dip and let it chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving. Enjoy!

Ingredients (to serve 4):

  • 1 can of butter beans
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 6 anchovy fillets
  • 1 can of tomatoes
  • 1 red chilli, finely sliced
  • 4 cups of dried pasta
  • Water, for cooking

Instructions:

  1. Heat the oil in a pan and then add the chili and garlic. Cook for 2 – 3 minutes, making sure the garlic doesn’t burn.
  2. Add the anchovies into the pan, and break them apart using a spatula.
  3. Add the drained beans to the pan, adding a splash of water if necessary.
  4. After 4 minutes, add the tomatoes plus a little water to loosen the sauce.
  5. Simmer the sauce for 10 – 15 minutes, allowing it to reduce and thicken.
  6. Cook the pasta according to packet instructions. Once cooked, drain but reserve around two tablespoons of the cooking water.
  7. Add the sauce to the pasta, stirring in well.
  8. Serve immediately.

Elevate your mashed potato game with the luxurious Paris mash, a staple in French cuisine known for its silky texture and rich buttery flavor. Ingredients

  • 3 large potatoes (about 2 pounds)
  • Fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1 cup butter
  • Optional – extra butter or parsley to serve

Instructions

  1. Boil the potatoes in their skins until done. While they’re still hot, peel the potatoes. 
  2. After peeling, pass the potatoes through a ricer and then through a drum sieve into a saucepan for a smooth texture. 
  3. With a wooden spoon, stir the mashed potatoes over low heat until all the moisture has evaporated.
  4. Add ½ cup of butter to the mashed potatoes and stir until the butter is fully incorporated. Add half of the milk and continue to stir. 
  5. Repeat this process with the remaining butter and milk until all ingredients are well combined and the mash is light and creamy.
  6. For an extra touch of indulgence, serve with add a knob of butter on top. Sprinkle with fresh parsley for a pop of color and flavor if desired.

When you’re in need of a quick and tasty dinner, look no further than this simple pasta recipe. Using only a few store cupboard ingredients, you can whip up a healthy, nutritious meal in under half an hour. The recipe can be added to, one option is to wilt fresh spinach into the sauce in the final moments of cooking. However, it’s also delicious left just as it is, so if you want to keep it simple you won’t be disappointed.

Ingredients (to serve 4):

  • 1 can of butter beans
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 6 anchovy fillets
  • 1 can of tomatoes
  • 1 red chilli, finely sliced
  • 4 cups of dried pasta
  • Water, for cooking

Instructions:

  1. Heat the oil in a pan and then add the chili and garlic. Cook for 2 – 3 minutes, making sure the garlic doesn’t burn.
  2. Add the anchovies into the pan, and break them apart using a spatula.
  3. Add the drained beans to the pan, adding a splash of water if necessary.
  4. After 4 minutes, add the tomatoes plus a little water to loosen the sauce.
  5. Simmer the sauce for 10 – 15 minutes, allowing it to reduce and thicken.
  6. Cook the pasta according to packet instructions. Once cooked, drain but reserve around two tablespoons of the cooking water.
  7. Add the sauce to the pasta, stirring in well.
  8. Serve immediately.

Turmeric Chai Latte is a warm, comforting beverage packed with health benefits. It’s also super easy to make, so why not give it a try? Follow this simple recipe to make your own delicious turmeric chai latte at home.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 black tea bag (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it is warm but not boiling.
  2. Whisk in the ground turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and black pepper until well combined.
  3. Add the honey or maple syrup and vanilla extract to the milk mixture. Continue to whisk until everything is fully incorporated and the mixture is hot.
  4. If you prefer a stronger chai flavor, add the black tea bag to the saucepan. Let it steep for 3-5 minutes, then remove the tea bag.

Ingredients

  • 3 large potatoes (about 2 pounds)
  • Fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1 cup butter
  • Optional – extra butter or parsley to serve

Instructions

  1. Boil the potatoes in their skins until done. While they’re still hot, peel the potatoes. 
  2. After peeling, pass the potatoes through a ricer and then through a drum sieve into a saucepan for a smooth texture. 
  3. With a wooden spoon, stir the mashed potatoes over low heat until all the moisture has evaporated.
  4. Add ½ cup of butter to the mashed potatoes and stir until the butter is fully incorporated. Add half of the milk and continue to stir. 
  5. Repeat this process with the remaining butter and milk until all ingredients are well combined and the mash is light and creamy.
  6. For an extra touch of indulgence, serve with add a knob of butter on top. Sprinkle with fresh parsley for a pop of color and flavor if desired.
