Whatever your level of baking is, the best way to enhance your baked creations is by familiarizing yourself with the different types of frostings there are and which is best for what type of baked good. A delicious and creamy frosting can take your baking to a whole different level, so familiarize yourself with these types and become a real professional.

Buttercream

As the name suggests, buttercream is a type of frosting where you combine butter and sugar. Some people also use vegetable shortening in it to make it creamier. This is probably the most classic version of a frosting when people think of frosting. It is great for piping on any type of plain cake, but especially cupcakes.

Cream Cheese

Cream cheese frosting is when you take a classic buttercream frosting foundation and basically add cream cheese to it. A lot of recipes say to use room temperature cream cheese, but it actually turns out better to use it cold! This is the perfect frosting for vegetable cakes like carrot, and especially red velvet cake.

Swiss Meringue Buttercream

This is one of the silkiest frostings and will absolutely impress anyone who sees it. A Swiss meringue buttercream is not really difficult to make but it does require a few steps. You’ll need to combine egg whites, sugar, and salt in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Whisk constantly the sugar has dissolved. The whisk mixture until fluffy and completely cool.
