Corndogs make for a great snack or a light lunch. But did you know you can make this classic dish in your kitchen? All the magic is in the simple batter and a few minutes in the fryer. Let’s jump in.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil, plus more for frying
  • 8-10 hot dogs
  • Wooden skewers

Instructions

  1. Insert wooden skewers into the hot dogs. In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the beaten egg, buttermilk, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Whisk until the batter is smooth.
  2. Pour oil into a deep fryer or large pot. Heat the oil to 350°F.
  3. Dip each hot dog into the batter, making sure it’s completely coated. Let the excess batter drip off for a few seconds.
  4. Carefully place the battered hot dogs into the hot oil. Fry until they’re golden brown, usually about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Once cooked, remove the corndogs from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain off any excess oil.
  6. Serve hot with mustard or ketchup and enjoy.
