Corndogs make for a great snack or a light lunch. But did you know you can make this classic dish in your kitchen? All the magic is in the simple batter and a few minutes in the fryer. Let’s jump in.
Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 1/4 cups buttermilk (or regular milk)
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil, plus more for frying
- 8-10 hot dogs
- Wooden skewers
Instructions
- Insert wooden skewers into the hot dogs. In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the beaten egg, buttermilk, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Whisk until the batter is smooth.
- Pour oil into a deep fryer or large pot. Heat the oil to 350°F.
- Dip each hot dog into the batter, making sure it’s completely coated. Let the excess batter drip off for a few seconds.
- Carefully place the battered hot dogs into the hot oil. Fry until they’re golden brown, usually about 3-5 minutes.
- Once cooked, remove the corndogs from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain off any excess oil.
- Serve hot with mustard or ketchup and enjoy.
