Beans on toast is one of those classic international meals that is so simple you’d think it would be impossible to mess up. But if you’re trying to make this meal abroad and you don’t have the proper lifelong English experience of how to do it right, you may find beans on toast lacking and come to the blasphemous conclusion that it’s not good. Which is categorically untrue. Beans on toast are great. You just have to make them correctly. Here is how.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread. Don’t try to be healthy or fancy now. Simple, supermarket white bread is the way to go. Thick-cut, ideally.
  • 1 tin of baked beans. It’s gotta be Heinz or you might as well not bother.
  • Cheese. We suggest cheddar but we guess you can decide this one for yourself.

Directions

  • Toast your white bread. How? In a toaster, silly. What are we, fancy chefs who toast their bread in a frying pan?
  • Transfer your beans to a pot and warm it on the stove. Medium heat, stirring constantly, for about four or five minutes.
  • Grate your cheddar cheese. Sorry, we meant: grate the cheese of your choice.
  • Grab your favorite plate. Put the toast on it, each of the two pieces separate, open-faced. Put the beans on the toast and top generously with shredded cheese. If you can stand it, wait a bit for the cheese to melt slightly before eating.
