How to Prepare and Use a 5 Minute Egg

Some dishes have names that are not easy to understand, but not this one: a 5-minute egg is exactly what it sounds like. For this type of egg, you only have to boil it for 5 minutes and you get an egg that is more than an egg because it has transformed into something totally different. Here’s all you need to know.

Normally when you make hard-boiled eggs you let the water come to a boil with the egg inside the pot already. But, for a 5-minute egg, the water should already be boiled. To make sure it doesn’t break, use a slotted spoon to gently place the egg in the water and set the timer.

Once the 5 minutes is up, immediately put the egg in an ice bath. This is super important because that will stop the cooking process and make the egg cold enough to peel.

Once you’ve made the egg, here are some ways to use it:

Ramen

A bowl of ramen,  unless you’re making it vegan, isn’t complete with a soft boiled egg. The combination of the salt, umami, and creaminess from the egg is amazing.

Avocado Toast

Take your toast to the next level with a soft boiled egg and you’ll never look back.
