A cast iron skillet is different than anything else you’ve ever cooked on. Because of its composition of cast iron, it is completely oven safe, as well as allowing your food to absorb small amounts of iron when you’re cooking on. This is super beneficial for vegans and vegetarians who struggle with iron deficiency! A cast iron skillet also makes your food cook more evenly, because of the distribution of heat is spread equally. But, because of all of these things, you can’t just clean a cast iron as usual. Here is a step by step guide on how to clean them because again, they are completely unique and need special care.

What You Need

  • Sponge
  • Clean, dry cloth or paper towels
  • Vegetable oil
  • Kosher salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make sure you start the cleaning process as soon as you’re done using your skillet (yep while it’s still hot). This most definitely means to avoid any soaking of the pan in water because it will rust.
  2. No dishwasher zone! Wash the skillet by hand using hot water. Sponge off any leftovers. Use a deterrent-free sponge (we recommend using a new or clean sponge). Note: any kind of detergent or steel woo may strip the pan’s seasoning.
  3. To remove stubborn stuck-on food, scrub the pan with kosher salt, then rinse with water.
  4. Dry the skillet on the stove until complete dry.
  5. Apply a light coat of vegetable oil to the inside of the skillet (you call also oil the outside of the skillet.) Remove any excess.
  6. Store in a dry place.
