No Meat? Try These Meat Substitutes

While grocery shopping, you may have noticed that the meat counters are looking extremely bare and the prices have gone up. The country’s meat processing plants are closed or slowing production due to coronavirus. These meat substitutes taste just as good as the real thing and you can create delicious meals with them.

Try Tofu Instead of Chicken

Tofu doesn’t have to be flavorless; when seasoned right it’s versatile and it absorbs almost any marinade or flavor you add to it. Try grilling it with teriyaki flavors, eating it in a sandwich, or giving it a crunchy coating.

Try Beans Instead of Ground Beef

Cooked legumes like beans, chickpeas, and lentils, can be swapped for ground beef recipes and it can save you money. Give black beans burgers or vegetarian chili a go.

Trk Jackfruit Instead of Pork

The meaty flesh of the fruit can be shredded and cooked like pulled pork. You can find canned jackfruit in the Asian section of supermarkets and grocery stores often have ready-to-cook packages of jackfruit that are already marinated.

since becoming vegetarian I’ve tried a whole lot of plant based replacements and alternatives, but jackfruit has been one of my ultimate favorites by far- and I’ve definitely tricked a few meat eaters into loving it, too😉 I usually like to make this recipe with a little bit of coleslaw on a toasted bun or mini corn tortilla (perfect) but as you know, pandemic and all, it isn’t really the best time to run to the store and browse for coleslaw, so I switched things up a bit and used what I had: a pita wrap, some fresh spinach and the best part *🥁* caramelized onions!! it actually all came together really well, so I guess I’ll just have to save the jackfruit sliders as a recipe for another time☁️ . bbq jack fruit— ☼ 1 20oz can of jackfruit ☼ 1/2 tsp garlic powder ☼ 1/2 tsp chili powder ☼ 1/4 tsp salt ☼ 1 1/2 tsp paprika ☼ 1 tsp brown sugar ☼ 1 1/2 tsp olive oil ☼ 1/2 c of bbq sauce ☼ optional: 1/2 tsp liquid smoke . 🌿begin by draining your jackfruit + shredding it with a fork by scraping in a downward motion. some people take out the core, but that doesn’t really bother me much! in a large bow, combine your jackfruit with your garlic powder, chili powder, salt, paprika, brown sugar, and liquid smoke. toss until the jackfruit is fully coated in all of the spices. heat your olive oil in medium saucepan and cook your jackfruit for about 5-10 minutes, stirring consistently. you may want to shred the jackfruit a bit more as it cooks using the back of your spatula! remove from the heat + enjoy!

Try Portobellos Instead of Burgers

Mushrooms are commonly used to replace meat because they have a savory umami flavor and meaty texture. They’re sturdy enough to grill without falling apart and they’re large enough to eat like a burger.
