Apple butter is a classic American condiment reserved for this time of the year. It is super warm, sweet, and perfect on everything from toast to cornbread. Apple butter is more of a jam than a butter, but the name still stands. Having apple butter on the table in the morning is such a treat that you can even give some of this homemade recipe to your friends as gifts!
Instructions
- Cut 4 pounds of apples into quarters, keeping the peel and core intact.
- Put the apples in a pot and cover with just enough water so that they can cook all the way through.
- Bring the water to a boil and then down to a simmer and cook the apples for 20 minutes.
- Pour the apples into a food mill or fine mesh strainer so you are left with just the meat. Discard the skins and seeds or save them for another recipe.
- Pour the purée back into the pot and mix in sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt.
- Cook this mixture on low heat until the apple butter has thickened into a jam-like consistency, anywhere from 1-2 hours.
- Cool the butter off the heat, pour into jars, and enjoy!
