Nothing Says Fall More Than Homemade Apple Butter

Apple butter is a classic American condiment reserved for this time of the year. It is super warm, sweet, and perfect on everything from toast to cornbread. Apple butter is more of a jam than a butter, but the name still stands. Having apple butter on the table in the morning is such a treat that you can even give some of this homemade recipe to your friends as gifts!

Instructions

  1. Cut 4 pounds of apples into quarters, keeping the peel and core intact.
  2. Put the apples in a pot and cover with just enough water so that they can cook all the way through.
  3. Bring the water to a boil and then down to a simmer and cook the apples for 20 minutes.
  4. Pour the apples into a food mill or fine mesh strainer so you are left with just the meat. Discard the skins and seeds or save them for another recipe.
  5. Pour the purée back into the pot and mix in sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt.
  6. Cook this mixture on low heat until the apple butter has thickened into a jam-like consistency, anywhere from 1-2 hours.
  7. Cool the butter off the heat, pour into jars, and enjoy!
