Building and decorating ginger houses is the perfect holiday activity. But to make sure your holiday house is a success, you need to start with sturdy building blocks. Of course, no less important is that they taste. Here’s a great recipe for both structure and taste.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon ground ginger
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup molasses
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, mix molasses, water, and butter until smooth.
- Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Stir and then knead the dough on a floured surface until it is smooth and pliable.
- Next, refrigerate the dough for at least 2 hours so that it sets.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out shapes using gingerbread house templates.
- Place the cutouts on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes. The edges should be firm, and the centers should be set. Let the pieces cool completely before assembling the house.
