Rome Has a Pizza Vending Machine

Rome is famous for the Vatican, ancient ruins, and the best pizza in the world, and it just became famous for the first vending machine that delivers pizza. The youngest pizzaiolo (that’s pizza maker in Italian) is named Mr. Go and it has fresh pizza ready 24/7.

The machine came to life thanks to entrepreneur Massimo Bucolo. “There was a hole in the market. Although Rome is an important city, there was nothing [foodwise] available through the night,” Bucolo tells CNN Travel. “We never wanted to compete with a classic pizzeria.”

Bucolo used to work as a pizza maker before. As he admits, pizza from his vending machine is not actually a real pizza, but a cross between a pizza and a piadina, a type of flatbread. It’s not possible to cook real pizza in a vending machine, because it requires a wood-fired oven and a firm hand.

Mr. Go is located in a residential part of Rome, a 15-minute drive from the Colosseum or Pantheon, in the area called Piazza Bologna. Nearby are a hospital and a student area, which means there’s a demand for nighttime meals.

The machine offers four types of pizza: a margherita, quattro formaggi, spicy salami, and pancetta. There’s enough flour and water in the machine to make 100 pizzas without stopping.
