Getting perfect rice every time is a really important cooking skill to learn, and it can be trickier than it might sound! There are many methods, some of which involve rice cookers or other cooking tech, but with this trick, you can get amazing rice without any other kit. Here is a simple trick to get perfect rice every time.

Wash Your Rice

For this method, it’s best to use basmati rice. Washing your rice is a very important step to ensure you get crisp and separated grains rather than a sticky mess. For some dishes, sticky rice is desired, which makes washing less important. For now, you will want to wash your rice in cold water and wash it with your hand before draining the water. Repeat this at least three times, or until the water runs clear.

Bring It To Boil

Next, you can lightly salt your rice to add a bit of flavor. Add twice as much water to your rice ratio, and bring it to a boil with a lid on from cold. This is where the twist happens; as soon as your rice is bubbling, turn off your hob and leave your rice resting not on the heat. It is really important not to take your lid off now as you will let lots of heat out.

Leave To Stand

With your rice resting on the side, and the lid on at all times, you can now relax and set a timer for 40 minutes. During this time, you can prepare the rest of your meal or do something else. The water in the rice will gradually evaporate over the 40 minutes and you will be left with perfect rice, every time!

It’s always hard to measure the right amount of rice to cook. So next time you’re cooking rice, go ahead and make a larger portion. The leftovers can be transformed into new dishes with just a few simple steps. Here are three great ideas.

Rice Porridge

Rice Porridge is a staple in many Asian countries. With a variety of topping options, you can easily make it your own. Combine rice with water or broth in a pot. Boil, then simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Cook until creamy (30-60 minutes). Season with salt and add your favorite toppings.

Fried Rice

Transform leftover rice into a quick, flavorful meal with fried rice. It’s great for incorporating any leftover vegetables and proteins. Heat oil in a pan. Sauté garlic until fragrant. Add vegetables and proteins and cook until nearly done. Scramble eggs on one side of the pan. Stir in rice, breaking clumps, and mix well. Season with soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook until heated through and garnish with green onions.

Rice Fritters

Create crispy, delicious fritters from leftover rice for a satisfying snack, appetizer, or side. Mix rice, eggs, cheese, flour, herbs, salt, and pepper. Heat oil in a pan. Form mixture into small patties and fry each one until golden and crispy.

Rice is one of the most popular, fiber-rich, and available grains that people use in everyday cooking. You can find it in burritos, salads, soups, desserts, and much more. As a complex carb, it allows you to stay full for a longer period of time. Of course, there are many varieties of rice, and you should always pick healthier ones. Here’s what they are.

Black Rice

Black rice is also known by the names forbidden or purple rice. It gets its purple color from the pigment anthocyanin, which is a strong antioxidant. Back in ancient China, black rice was considered so good and nutritious, that only royalties were allowed to consume it. Today, it’s also considered a good source of protein. It’s high in fiber, and lowers cholesterol. The only thing that may stop you is that it’s a bit difficult to find.

Wild Rice

Despite the name, it’s not actually the kind of rice you would expect. It’s a grass-like plant that grows near shallow rivers and streams. Wild rice is native to North America, around Great Lakes. It has a strong flavor and higher price than regular rice. This rice is rich in nutrients and boasts impressive amounts of protein, manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc. Like all others, it’s rich in fiber and antioxidants.

Brown Rice

Brown rice is especially good because it’s a whole grain that contains bran and germ. These provide additional fiber, vitamins, and minerals. If you remove all these parts, you would get white rice. Brown rice is nutrient-rich, has positive effects on blood sugar levels, and reduces the risk of heart disease. It also helps in controlling weight.

Rice is a staple in so many countries around the world, and it makes a delicious accompaniment to dishes including curry, chilli and dahl. But sometimes, common mistakes can result in under or over cooked rice, or rice that is too gloopy and sticky. Check out these tips on how to achieve perfect rice every time, without using a rice cooker.

Rinse The Rice

If you don’t thoroughly rinse the rice, the finished result will be incredibly glutinous and sticky. Use a sieve and stir the rice under running water to ensure that every strand gets rinsed.

Cover With Cold Water

Cover the rice with at least 1 inch of cold water. Let the rice come to the boil, before reducing the heat and letting it simmer until it has absorbed the rest of the water.

Don’t Stir

Avoid stirring the rice until the final few minutes of cooking. Stirring can change the texture of the rice and stop it from absorbing all of the water. Once the rice is almost cooked, fluff it with a serving utensil before serving as quickly as possible.

Avoid common mistakes when cooking you rice, to get results of soft, fluffy rice every time!

White rice shouldn’t be hard to make. It’s actually one of the easier carb options to go with a good meal. Somehow, though, so many people mess it up and can’t seem to figure out why. Normally what happens is that you end up with your rice grain glued to each other, to the bottom of the pot, or both. What can you do to prevent this from happening, then? Here are a few super simple tips.

Rinse

It’s common knowledge that you’re supposed to rinse rice before you cook it. However, some people skip this part (since technically, you can cook rice without rinsing it first) or just rush through it. The thing is, other than making the rice cleaner, the action of properly rinsing it also helps keep rice grains from sticking to one another while cooking. So, take your time with rinsing, and use a proper strainer to do so. Once the water coming out at the bottom turns from grey-ish to clear, the rice is ready to be cooked.

Fry

Yep, use a bit of oil, guys! Nothing major, just a thin layer of cooking oil at the bottom of the pot will do. Simply fry your rice for two or three minutes before you add the water. You’ll be surprised how much it helps keep rice grains smooth and separate.

Use Less Water

Recipes on store-bought rice bags might tell you to add 1.5 cups of water for each cup of rice you put in the pot. But the truth is, if you’re really into getting non-sticky, evenly-cooked rice, one cup of water per one cup of rice is the perfect balance. Try it!

Okay, rice may be one of the simplest things you cook, but that doesn’t make it easy. In fact, for some reason, cooking rice is really hard, with lots of things that can go wrong, leaving you with either burnt or gross, mushy rice. And when it’s brown rice you’re cooking, it only gets harder for some reason. But never fear. After lots of trial and error, we’re bringing you the brown rice recipe that turns out perfectly each time. Here’s how to do it.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup uncooked brown rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil

Directions

  • Thoroughly rinse your brown rice. Keep at it until the water runs clear. This will remove excess starch, helping to prevent clumping and gumminess.
  • Add water, rice, and oil into a medium-sized saucepan.
  • Bring the water to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let simmer for 45 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and let the rice sit covered for ten minutes to steam.
  • Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork.

Just one pro tip: every kitchen, pot, and brand of rice are different. It might take some trial and error to hone down on the exact cooking times that will work for your rice.
