The Croque Madame Is The Ultimate Sandwich

Say hello to a mouth-watering cross between a ham sandwich and a grilled cheese — the croque-madame! This French sandwich is also topped with an absolutely gorgeous bechamel sauce and a fried egg. The sandwich is said to be over 100 years old, and time has just made it more delicious. Try this savory and satisfying sandwich and you’ll never go back to a regular sandwich again.

Ingredients

To make a really great croque madame, you have to start with good, thick white bread because it has to stand up to a creamy bechamel and you don’t want it to go soggy. You also need a nice type of cheese like gruyere, munster, or maybe even a gouda.

Method

  1. Cut your bread into thick slices and spread butter on one side of each piece.
  2. Slather on Dijon mustard on the other side and place the ham and whatever type of cheese you choose.
  3. Put the sandwich together and fry on both sides.
  4. Then, make the bechamel sauce by starting to warm up some milk.
  5. Then, melt some butter in a heavy bottom saucepan. After it starts to bubble, add in flour and whisk quickly.
  6. Add in the warm milk and stir until smooth.
  7. Fry an egg.
  8. Cover the sandwich in the bechamel and place the egg on top.
