Oatmeal is a great breakfast choice throughout the year, but especially as the colder months approach. Oats release their energy slowly, meaning you’ll feel satisfied all the way to lunch, without needing to snack. Oatmeal can also be adapted to suit your tastes, as these three different topping ideas demonstrate – whether you want to go sweet or savory, there is an oatmeal topping for you!

Cocoa Nut Butter

Ingredients (to serve 2):

  • 2 tbsp nut butter (such as peanut butter, cashew nut butter, or almond butter)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup

Instructions:

  1. In a pan, melt the coconut butter, and stir the nut butter through it.
  2. Add the cocoa powder, stir well, and then add the maple syrup.
  3. If the sauce needs loosening, add a touch more maple syrup, or vegetable oil.
  4. Pour on top of your oatmeal and dig in.

Cinnamon Frosted Apple

Ingredients (to serve 2):

  • 2 apples
  • 1/4 cup of icing sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp water

Instructions:

  1. Slice the apples thinly.
  2. Mix the water into the icing sugar until it reaches the desired consistency (you may need to use less water than stated).
  3. Dip the apple slices into the frosting, and then sprinkle cinnamon over the apple.
  4. Place on top of your oatmeal for a truly decadent treat.

Cheesy Pesto

Ingredients (to serve 2):

  • 1/4 cup of grated cheese
  • 2 tbsp of pesto
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions:

As the oatmeal is cooking, stir the cheese and pesto through it so that the cheese melts and is well combined. Pour the oatmeal into bowls, drizzle with olive oil, and season well.
