Your mac n’ cheese will be as tasty as the cheese you use, and that’s why it’s crucial to make the right choice. Most people go with cheddar, gouda, and cream cheese when it comes to this ultimate comfort food, but there are certain types of cheeses you should never use as their replacement.

Pre-Shredded Cheese

The tricky thing about pre-packaged shredded cheese is that it won’t do a good job melting in your mac & cheese. These types of cheeses are often packed with preservatives that are keeping them fresh and stopping them from sticking together, so they may turn your mac & cheese into a lumpy mess.

Queso Fresco

Cheeses that don’t melt well don’t belong anywhere near your mac & cheese and they’ll just ruin your dish if you add them to the mix. Queso fresco falls under this category, but so do many other types of cheeses, such as kasseri, paneer, and cotija.

Feta

No matter how much you love feta, you probably shouldn’t put it inside your & cheese. Just like queso fresco, this type of cheese won’t melt well because it doesn’t have the proper moisture level for mac & cheese and it’ll leave tiny clumps of cheese behind.
